My grandmother passed away yesterday.

Anyone who knows me well knows that she lived with us, raising my brother and me from young. At times, she could be difficult and unyielding, driving my parents up the wall with her antics. But I know that she always meant well, insisting on doing the chores even with a bad leg. I just collected the last pile of laundry she washed from the machine to hang dry.

Still, she's had a good long life... 80 years. That's a blessing.

My Ah Kong is devastated though.

Human nature makes it hard to let go.

Age creeps up on all of us.

As jokingly put in hokkien terms, "old already, no one wants already"...

Freckles was running about the neighbourhood aimlessly. We thought she was abandoned, cruelly treated and callously thrown out, having outlived her usefulness.

"Oh the tenant must've opened the gate."
"Ya, I know [that she's smelly & in a horrible state]."
"She's got a lot of allergies la."

No doubt the woman was heavily pregnant, but what a sight for your son to behold.

She was lost for merely a night. To think we felt it better she be put to sleep.

Anyhow, we washed her up twice, dug out the grime in her ears, cleaned away the gunk in her eyes and treated her skin as best as we could.
